A girl is in bed with her new boyfriend. The morning sun caresses his drowsy body. A confession from the girl: the day before she slept with his best friend. The twinkle in his eyes immediately disappears. There seems to be a hint of sadism in this couple's relationship. That jealousy-provoking infidelity, or rather, to stay with the vocabulary of Rytel's characters, 'fucking with somebody else', appears to put their relationship to the test, and to make their bond even stronger. They decide to confront their mutual friend with it. 'Play Girl' undermines the conventions and norms in a relationship and shows in this way that those rules apply to women much more than to men. Joanna Rytel subtly exposes these unwritten gender-specific rules. In many of her films sex plays an important role. No circumspect approach from her; she throws it right in your face. She lets her actors speak plainly, sometimes almost shockingly so. In this way, not only does she take position against the romantic ideal that is omnipresent in the cinema, but also against the exaggerated sex ideal of pornography. This artist also treats sex as a form of expression of her characters. It is a way for them to lay bare their human flaws, their desires or fears, in short, to show their vulnerable side and to be all human. Netherlands Media Art Institute, Nanda Janssen

Joanna Rytel is an artist and journalist, born in Warsaw, Poland, in 1974. She emigrated to Sweden and studied at the Högskolan för fotografi och film in Göteborg and at Konstfack in Stockholm, where she currently works and lives. Together with Fia-Stina Sandlund, she was a member of the feminist performance group 'Unfucked Pussy', which, among others, staged protests against the 2001 Miss Sweden pageant. As an individual artist and writer, Rytel caused international controversy with outspoken, opinionated texts about same-race and interracial relationships, and with pro-abortion art projects. Her strongly political art practice focuses on feminism, gender, human relations and power structures, as well as on the relation between humans and animals.
